We are an environmentally responsible small business...
This is an easy statement to make, but we can back it up. If you prefer to support businesses who strive to run a green operation and reduce their carbon foot print we invite you to read on.
Before moving into this larger building in 2003 we modernized the interior for aesthetic appeal, however, we also took steps to make the building energy efficient and capable of reusing the liquid waste inherent to auto service. We feel it is imperative to be good stewards of the earth.
Some of the steps we took include:
- Floor Drains
Many shops send coolant and oily water from their floor out to an oil water separator and on to the sanitary sewer which ultimately leads to ponds, rivers and oceans. We sealed our drains. Our floors are spot cleaned using recycled cleaning rags. All engine coolant is contained and recycled, generally reused in concrete production.
- Sealed Floor Surface
Concrete automotive shop floors will allow oil and other the liquids to seep through over time, which can lead to ground contamination. Before moving in we had our shop floor surfaced with 3 coats of a commercial grade finish making it impervious to liquids.
- Energy Efficient Bay Doors
The bay doors are 1 1/2 inches thick, filled with foam insulation. Light comes in through 3 small thermo-pane windows. These doors help keep the heat out in the summer and keep the cold out during the winter.
- Heat for the shop area
The shop is heated by waste engine oil and transmission fluid. Using the petroleum we have here, onsite, prevents the need to transport 1000 gallons of heating oil here and the carbon foot print that would leave. Using the oil we remove from cars also prevents the trucking of 1000 gallons of waste away from here. The money saved goes right to our information technology and technical training budgets.
- Lighting
In the summer of 2007 we had a lighting energy audit done. The recommendations to have all our interior lighting refurbished and motion sensors installed were carried out. This project was expensive but it reduced our electric consumption by 30%.
- Recycling
Through recycling we have been able to reduce the amount of trash picked up here by 75%
We currently recycle:
| Office paper |
#1 & #2 plastic |
Glass bottles |
Cans |
| Cardboard |
Oily rags |
Metal auto parts |
Waste oil |
| Newspaper |
Junk mail |
Engine coolant |
Oil filters |
| Tires |
How can you reduce the pollutants you car produces?
- Consider high quality pure synthetic oil when you get an oil change.
If your car has less than 50,000 miles you can use this oil to increase the oil change interval, check with the vehicle manufacturer or contact us first.
- Very few cars require a 3000 mile oil change interval anymore.
Read your owners manual, most cars built since 2000 can safely go 5000 - 7500 miles between oil changes, particularly if you use a high quality synthetic blend oil and a high quality oil filter.
